India’s nuclear fusion startups are urging policymakers to design regulations around the technology’s distinct features rather than adapting rules written for conventional nuclear reactors.

India’s nuclear sector is undergoing one of its biggest transformations, driven by policy reforms and technological advances.

Over the past year, the government has set a target of expanding nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047, enacted the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025, to modernise nuclear laws and enable limited private participation, and celebrated the first criticality of the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, marking the country’s entry into the second stage of its three-stage nuclear programme.
