Akshaya Thanga Maligai is Kalyan Jewellers’ first regional brand, built only for Tamil Nadu, a state whose homes hold more gold than most countries keep in their vaults.

When a wedding date is set, most Tamil families head to Chennai’s T Nagar for their jewellery and silk sarees. The heart of this shopping district is a short stretch of about a kilometre and a half that goes by the name North Usman Road. On weekends it is a mess. Cars inch along, two-wheelers squeeze through gaps, and the footpaths are packed. It’s a lot worse during the Tamil wedding months of Thai and Aavani, which fall around mid-January and mid-August. There’s simply no room to breathe.
