On Wednesday, November 6, the world tuned in as polls closed for the US general elections. However, what was expected to be a hotly-contested battle between sitting US Vice President Kamala Harris and former US President Donald Trump quickly devolved into a blowout. Within 24 hours of polls closing, it became evident that the latter had done enough (and then some) to secure a second term as president.
Trump’s victory was nothing if not decisive. Not only is he on course to win the Electoral College—he’s currently set to win 312 electoral college votes, well over the 270 required to clinch victory—but is also certain to win the popular vote as well, something he didn’t manage when he won his first term as president. Indeed, this marks the first time a Republican candidate had won the popular vote since George W. Bush two decades prior.
