India doesn’t want to overregulate AI. But does a light-touch approach ignore AI’s dangers?

Even as artificial intelligence (AI) companies continue to ramp up their capabilities, governments the world over are faced with the conundrum of how to regulate such a disruptive new technology while not losing out on its transformative potential. In India, things are no different.

At a recent roundtable session at industry body CII’s annual Global Economic Policy Forum 2024 in New Delhi, the government’s approach to AI regulation was discussed by representatives of industry, academia, government, and civil society. The discussion highlighted that while AI was likely the most disruptive technology of our lifetime, its responsible development and deployment are what will determine its eventual legacy.
