In the midst of the holiday season, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) announced it was imposing fines and issuing orders against Google India. It has charged Google with engaging in unfair practices that limited competition in India’s digital economy.
CCI’s first order, passed on October 20, said Google was abusing its dominant position in the smartphone operating system (OS) market by demanding that all smartphone manufacturers using its Android OS pre-install a suite of Google apps on their devices. This effectively gave unfair protection to its own apps in their respective markets—search (Google), video hosting/streaming (YouTube), and navigation (Google Maps).
