Karnataka has gone further than most states in trying to build a welfare net for gig workers.
Earlier this year, it became the first state to create a formal welfare framework for gig and platform workers, with the notification of the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2025.
The law mandates worker registration, requires platforms to share data with the government, and introduces a welfare fee of 1-1.5% on every payout to fund social security benefits.
