On October 1, Samir Kumar took charge of Amazon India’s consumer business. Kumar, who has been with the company for a quarter of a century and played a pivotal role in the e-commerce giant’s entry into India will have no honeymoon period.
His elevation comes even as Amazon faces significant competition from many domestic e-commerce competitors. This includes a clutch of young and hungry quick-commerce upstarts that are increasingly eating away at traditional e-commerce platforms’ business.
Not only must Kumar guide Amazon India through the increasingly crowded e-commerce field, but he must do so while steering the company towards profitability. Internally, as The CapTable has reported earlier, the company has set a target of turning profitable in 2025.
